VITAL

Leadership Training for Young People
Picture

Vital

VITAL is a great opportunity to develop the leadership potential of young people aged 14 - 17 years.
It has been run successfully in schools and parishes.
It is a six week course and includes a project aimed at linking school with a parish community.

VITAL is fun and it is a lively and interactive training course encompassing many life skills.
As well as building confidence and developing new and existing skills.

VITAL is a Diocesan Certificated Course and all participant will receive a certificate signed by Archbishop Bernard on completion.
ABOUT VITAL
Why is the course called VITAL?
VITAL means something which is essential, it means life and hopefully this course will give LIFE and show news ways of living out our life with God in a deeper way.
VITALITY means full of energy - this is the gift young people give to the Church today.
VIA  means Way. We are sometimes unclear about where we are going but the Gospel reminds us that Jesus is the Way the Truth and the Life
The T of the Cross in the logo also stands for Truth. The Cross is at the centre because we try to put Jesus is at the centre of all that we do.

VITAL Sessions
Each session will last 2 hours. It includes icebreakers, games, theory input, small group work, discussion, presentations, project work and an experience of 6 different encounters of prayer with young people.

1. Listening
This session is about effective and useful listening. We will look at the different ways in which we listen, at good and bad listening and how to improve our listening skills and how we can use these skills in peer group leadership. We explore this through activities, discussion and practicing our listen skills.

2. Communication
In this session you will gain an understanding of why communication skills are important, and discover some of the obstacles to effective communication.
By the end of this session you will have:
-   An understanding of why communication skills are important
-   Discovered some of the obstacles to effective communication
-   Learned about giving & receiving feedback
-   Started to look at basic presentation skills

3. You are Unique
In this session we explore how God created us as unique. We are unique and different and we grow and learn in different ways.
By the end of this unit you will:
-   Appreciate the value of the individual
-   Understand that we develop at our own rate
-   Have an insight into individual difference and that we learn in different ways
-   Plan and develop a piece of work with young people recognising these differences

4. Group work and leadership
Our experience of human life is in groups whether as part of a family, school or social groups. This is a fascinating session exploring the roles and characteristics of groups.
By the end of the session you will:
-   Be able to identify the purpose of different groups
-   Have experienced team building games
-   Know how to observe small group activities
-   Understand the need to evaluate group and team activities
-   Be able to identify different Leadership Styles

5 & 6 Prayer and Liturgy
We have touched on spirituality in the previous 5 sessions and you will already have had opportunities to experience different aspects of spirituality. In this unit we explore what underpins our Catholic youth work and our journey to God. By the end of the two sessions you will:
-   Know about different types of prayer
-   Understand more about the Liturgical year
-   Know how to plan and lead a short night prayer, using symbols
-   Identify the parts of the Mass
-   Understand the importance of the parts of the Mass
