Family Activity Days & Adventure Holidays: Fun for all the family!

Alton Castle is a 19th century castle. It was designed by the architect Augustus Pugin and is situated in the Churnet Valley, Staffordshire.
Sitting majestically above the Churnet Valley, surrounded by ancient woodland, Alton Castle has had many different uses and purposes over the years. The current Pugin Castle is actually the third Castle on this historic site. The first was an Anglo-Saxon castle (8th century) and the ruins of the second castle, a Norman stronghold built in 1176, can still be seen.
Since the late 20th century, Alton Castle has been welcoming groups for outdoor adventurous activities. Ride out into the valley on one of our mountain bikes, trek out into the countryside, or scale our climbing wall.

Activity Experiences

As part of your half-day activity, full day activity or short break adventure holiday, you and your family can take in the beautiful Staffordshire countryside as you embark on adventurous outdoor activities.

All activities will be led, socially distanced, by our qualified instructors, so you can enjoy your holiday worry free.

Venture out into the valley on a trek, take a ride on one of our mountain bikes, or try your hand at a spot of archery. All activities are suitable for children aged 7+ and for adults.

Sample half and full day activities:
  • Archery
  • Mountain Biking - bikes and helmets supplied
  • Trekking
  • Firelighting/bushcraft skills
  • Abseiling
  • Climbing
  • Team-building carousel activities

Activities are available subject to COVID-19 restrictions at the time of participation, in addition to weather conditions, and participant mobility, age and build. If for any reason an activity is not available, a suitable alternative will be provided. Please contact us for more information.
Activity itineraries are planned by the centre shortly before your arrival to ensure your family get a good balance of different activities. You can make any specific activity requests at the time of booking; we will try to accommodate these, but cannot guarantee it will always be possible.

All equipment is sanitised rigorously before and after use, in line with COVID-19 guidelines.

Accomodation

Each floor includes simple dormitory/basic hostel style accommodation in bunk beds (some floors offer some en-suite rooms).

Your package will also include use of a section of our dining room for meals, as well as a social space.

Some meals are included within the package, cooked by our amazing catering team.

Any large family groups wishing to cater for themselves could hire the whole castle, or could book our smaller accommodation at Soli (available for hire without activities,
activities can be purchased as individual experiences).
